It’s the time of year when you really need your heating and ventilation (HVAC) system to be working perfectly. However, there are several common HVAC problems you need to look out for. If ignored, these issues can lead to a strain on the system and result in heating failure – not ideal as the winter months set in.

The good news? Once you know more about what these potential HVAC problems are, you can easily spot them and get your system looked at by an expert. Read on to find out more.

1.    Unusual sounds

If your commercial HVAC system is making unusual sounds that you are not used to, it might be time to call in the experts.

  • A whistle from your air conditioning system could be because of a pressure imbalance.
  • An unusual clicking noise could indicate a faulty igniter or flame sensor in your heating system.
  • Rattling or clanging could also mean loose components or improperly secured parts.

To be safe, it’s best to call in a qualified engineer for maintenance on your HVAC system if it starts making any noises you are not familiar with.

2.    Rising energy bills

As a business, you’ll likely know how much the average energy costs for running your commercial HVAC system come to.

If you notice the energy costs for your heating rising an unusual degree, this is a good indication that the system is running inefficiently. The issue could be anything from clogged filters causing your system to work harder than it should have to, to a leak that you haven’t spotted.

It’s best to take action straightaway – preventing the problem from getting worse, and saving your business money on its energy bills.

3.    Impaired heating and cooling

Improper or uneven air balance from your HVAC system is also something that needs looking into. If your commercial space is experiencing temperature swings – whether hot or cold air – or uneven heating and cooling, your system isn’t working right.

The air supplied to an office or any other commercial space will pass through several dampers and ducts before use. It could be that these dampers need attention due to clogging, or simply need adjustment.

Whatever the issue, if your HVAC system isn’t heating and cooling your premises as it should, it’s time to book in a service.

4.    Unusual odours

Unusual odours coming from your HVAC system is definitely sign of trouble. Indoor air quality may be compromised if this is happening.

Odours could indicate a partial system failure, so be sure to get an expert to look at this as soon as possible.

Other issues to look out for:

  • excessive moisture around the system
  • signs of rust or deterioration
  • dirty coils or filters
  • leaky ducts
  • thermostat not working properly

If maintenance doesn’t solve the issue you’re experiencing, it’s a sign that you need to replace your HVAC system. There are many benefits to replacing your HVAC system – but before you get to that stage, get it checked over by the experts.
