We’re heading into the warmer months of the year. This is great news for those longing to hit the beach or fire up the BBQ, but businesses everywhere will be considering how best to keep their premises cool. Hot days are especially uncomfortable inside a busy office without air con.
Having a good commercial air conditioning system is a vital consideration for most businesses. Rising temperatures can otherwise severely impact staff health and performance. Having air con installed is great, but the question then becomes: when should I be running the factory or office air con to get the most benefits from it?
The cost of running commercial air con units overnight
Many businesses decide to run their commercial air con during the day and night. Some might be doing this because the office is still open for a night shift, but in other cases it is an attempt to keep the office cool for when staff come in next morning.
Some think that, by not turning off the air con, the system stays at the same temperature without wasting energy to regulate it – thereby saving them money on their energy bill.
This idea, however, is completely wrong.
Running commercial air con overnight is bad for the environment, and for your energy bills
Commercial air conditioning cools a space until it reaches the desired temperature. When it is left running all night, rather than just left to maintain a certain temperature in the day, it uses a vastly larger amount energy.
Running office air con overnight does not help regulate the temperature of a workplace. It will cost your business dearly in energy bills, and hugely impact the environment too – and reducing our carbon footprint is something all businesses should be working on.
Air con units made decades ago did encounter some complications when turned on and off constantly – but this is not the case with the modern air conditioning we use today. All electrical appliances save a lot of energy when they are switched off completely. Modern commercial air conditioning also run efficiently and more sustainably.
Keep your business cool using programmable thermostats
Most modern air conditioning units will be equipped with a programmable thermostat that can be used to regulate the temperature.
Rather than leaving the office air con unit running all night unnecessarily, you can programme the system to come an hour or so before staff arrive. By the time people get to work in the morning, the building will be sufficiently cooled for them to breath a sigh of relief, stepping from the hot outside air to the cool interior of the building.
With programmable thermostats, air conditioning units are no longer a drain on your energy bills, and continue to make workplace conditions safer and more pleasant for hardworking staff.
