As the weather heats up, more and more businesses will be using commercial air conditioning units to keep the inside temperature comfortable. The last thing you want is to turn on your air conditioning, only to find it isn’t working as well as you’d hoped – or, even worse, it isn’t working at all.

So, how often should commercial air conditioning be serviced to keep them running smoothly? Read on to find out.

How often to get your air conditioning serviced

It is recommended that you get your air conditioning serviced at least once a year. This is important, even if your unit appears to be working correctly, as regular maintenance by qualified air conditioning engineers prevents unexpected faults from occurring and keeps your air con running at optimal levels. Regular servicing will increase the lifespan of your air conditioning.

If your air conditioning unit holds more than three kilograms of coolant, certain rules for servicing apply. This will depend on the total carbon dioxide content (TC02) of coolant in your air conditioning unit:

  • If your unit has 5 TC02 of coolant, it will require annual maintenance.
  • If your unit has 50 TC02 of coolant, it will require a service check every six months.
  • If your unit has 500 TC02 of coolant, it will require a service check every three months.

Signs your commercial AC unit needs maintenance

Although you should aim to get your air conditioning serviced every year to ensure it performs at its best, there are signs to look out for that indicate servicing might be needed urgently:

  • Your air conditioning is taking longer to cool your premises down. This indicates the coolant level is too low.
  • Your air conditioning is making more noise than it used to. This might indicate fans clogged with dust, or a mechanical issue.
  • Your air conditioning is costing more to run. Air conditioning that sends you energy bills skyrocketing needs to be investigated, as it may not have been installed correctly.
  • Your air conditioning is emitting unpleasant, musty smells when it runs, indicating a build-up of mould or mildew in the unit.
  • You air conditioning is leaking water – any moisture or water leaking from the unit indicates internal problems with the unit.

Why it’s important to maintain your commercial air conditioning unit

It saves your business money

As with so many things, spending money now will save you further unexpected costs in the future. Getting your air conditioning regularly serviced will keep on top of any small issues, and prevent them from spiralling into expensive problems or unexpected breakdowns.

It increases the lifespan of your unit

You should expect to get many years of service from a well-installed, modern air conditioning unit – but only if it is regularly maintained. Neglecting the maintenance of your commercial air conditioning could leave you in the market for a new one well before you should be.

It saves money on your energy bill

As energy costs continue to rise, the cost of running commercial air conditioning has never been more important. Regular maintenance will help your air conditioning unit run as efficiently as possible, lowering your energy bills and reducing the carbon footprint of your business.

It improves the air quality of your premises

Air conditioning gets a bad reputation for spreading dust and allergens, and making the indoor air quality poor. But this is only true if you don’t get your air conditioning regularly maintained. Part of servicing your air conditioning is replacing clogged filters, and improving the indoor air quality.
