Recently, we spoken a fair bit about various ways to keep warm over the winter, and indeed we’ve also dispelled a few myths about heating that tend to be circulated. With Christmas now just two weeks away though, we’re starting to feel festive, so here are a few thoughts about heating and cooling that we think relate directly to this special time of year, and indeed to a certain famous gentlemen who has become synonymous with the 25th of December. We hope you enjoy them…
Is Wine Warming?
Pretty much all of us know that mince pies and mulled wine should be left out to give ol’ Father Christmas a break when he delivers the presents, and we’ve always wondered whether the latter gift is supposed to warm him up. After all, most people think alcohol has a warming effect…right? Nice though the thought may be, it’s actually wrong, as alcohol lowers your core temperature, prevents you from shivering and even enhances risk of hypothermia. The ‘warming’ effect of alcohol is caused by the (temporary) dilation of blood vessels, and means that you (and Santa) will be less able to fight off further cold. Perhaps we should think of another beverage to leave him this year…
Why Wear Layers?
In answer to the above question, to keep warm, and we wonder if this is Santa’s plan after all of that wine has cooled him down. When it comes to keeping warm, you’re better off going for many thin layers rather than a couple of smothering garments. One of the most important layers is your base layer (i.e. the one closest to your skin), and you should also remember you wear more than one layer on your legs too. This is often overlooked in favour of prioritising the top half of the body, but it shouldn’t be. We hope Santa’s got this one sorted, or that sleigh riding could be a really chilly ordeal.
Why Is Santa So Large?
“He had a broad face and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly!”
We’ve all heard the rhymes and songs, but have you ever wondered why Santa is so large? All that living in the cold should technically mean that his body burns far more calories to keep warm, so he should be pretty trim. Either he’s chronically short of exercise in the non-Christmas period, or he’s really taken the ‘wear layers thing’ to heart. If it’s the latter, then we certainly applaud the effort.
Of course, even if Father Christmas has got his heating facts askew, he can still rely on Heritage Heating to provide the best heating solutions from leading brands like Powrmatic (colloquially known as Powermatic) to meet his needs.
