Air Conditioning units are great products to have in your building for you and your employees, or in your home for your family. There are numerous benefits this product offers and as with warm air heating maintenance, it’s important to keep air conditioning products maintained, and to check if any repairs are required.
You want to get the best out of your air conditioning, to feel the full effects. Here are ways you can maintain your air conditioning units.
Air Conditioner Filters
An important maintenance task is routinely cleaning or replacing the filters, this will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner. If the filters are clogged or dirty, they block normal airflow, reducing the systems efficiency significantly. With the normal airflow being obstructed, air that passes the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil, impairing the heat-absorbing capacity.
You should clean or replace the filters every month or two in the warmer seasons, as this can lower your air conditioners energy consumption by 5% to 15%.
Air Conditioner Coils
The evaporator and condenser coils collect dirt over its use. Even if you do have clean filters, over time the evaporator coil will still collect dirt, resulting in the reduction of airflow, and insulating the coil, thus reducing its ability to absorb heat. It is suggested you should clean the coil every year to avoid this problem.
Window Seals for Room Air Conditioners
At the beginning of each cooling season, inspect the seal between the air conditioner and the window frame, ensuring it is contacting the units’ metal case. This is because moisture can damage the seal, allowing cool air to escape from your house.
The aluminium fins on coils are easily bent and can block airflow through the coil. Using a ‘fin comb’, these will comb the fins back into almost the original condition.
Clogged drain channels can prevent a unit from reducing humidity, resulting in excess moisture which may discolour walls or carpets. To prevent this, occasionally pass a stiff wire through the units drain channels.
Preparing for Winter
Throughout the winter season, you can either cover your air conditioner or remove and store it. Covering the outdoor unit of a central air conditioner will protect the unit from winter weather and debris.
There are signs to look out for when your air conditioning unit needs a service or repair, these can include; the cooling or heating not working as effectively as it should, or the air flow being restricted. Another common sign would be smells coming from the system.
If any of these occur, your air conditioning system needs servicing as soon as possible, as this is a sign that your unit is failing. This is common in systems that have not been regularly maintained, so it is highly important that they are, to prolong the life of your products.
