How to Keep Energy Bills Low this Summer

How to Keep Energy Bills Low this Summer

Whilst summer signals the time of year to switch off the heating, that doesn’t necessarily mean that those energy bills won’t continue to skyrocket. As the temperature soars, your employees will want the air conditioning cranked up so they can keep cool. Even though air conditioners are a great asset to have in the summer, they are a serious energy absorber.

Saving Money

However, you can’t be expected to not use the air conditioner at all in order to save on costs, you have a duty of care to ensure your workers don’t get over-heated in the workplace. So, here are a few ways you can continue to use your air conditioning unit whilst also keeping those energy bills as low as possible:

Use a Programmable Thermostat

There is nothing worse than paying for something you don’t need, and that includes running your air conditioner whilst no one is there to benefit. If you’re turning your unit on and off manually, eventually you are going to forget one evening and your air conditioning unit could end up being left on all night, blowing all that money away.

Prevent this from happening by programming your air conditioning unit to come on and switch off at the correct times. You won’t have to think about switching it off at the end of every day and you’ll save money by only having it on during times it’s needed.

Keep Air Conditioning Filters Clear

In order for air conditioners to run at their most efficient, it must be maintained and cleaned. The filters are a crucial part of the unit, they capture dust and debris. However, this also means that dust can end up being circulated through the air if the filters are dirty, and it can have a negative effect on the airflow and the system’s efficiency as it will have to work harder to circulate the cool air.

Make sure you replace or clean dirty filters to help the air conditioner’s energy consumption and prevent unclean air from being circulated around the workspace.

Block Out the Sun

Another step to keeping those energy bills down is to keep the workplace naturally cooler so you can use the air conditioner less frequently, or by not having the temperature as cold. One way to achieve this is to prevent the sun from getting in and heating the rooms up. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day to keep the sun out and take the strain off your air conditioning unit.

Paint the Interiors a Light Colour

If you have the time and means for a little interior decorating, you should consider having the walls painted a light colour such as white. Lighter colours reflect the sunlight, which will keep the rooms cooler and eliminate the need for additional lighting – lights are producers of heat and should be kept off as much as possible to minimise the heat. This interior design job will help to keep the workplace cooler, reducing the reliance on that air conditioner and reducing energy costs overall.

Use Air Conditioning Efficiently

Whilst air conditioners can be necessary in the summer, you shouldn’t leave them on more than you need or have them set at too low a temperature. Just turning the air conditioner down by a few degrees has the potential to yield some big savings. It’s also worth considering whether it needs to be on all day or just at the hottest parts of the day. This could also vary depending on how hot it is; the UK summer is not the most reliable so this may be something you need to do at the start of each day. Alternatively, you could assign this role to one person in the workplace to avoid employee spats over temperature control.
