Prepping Your Office for Summer

Finally, summer appears to be here, and as we prepare for longer days and delicious BBQ’s, ensuring that your employees are healthy and happy in the workplace becomes even more of a priority.

Looking at recent statistics, on the 19th April 2018, which was the hottest day of the year so far, a record one in five employees called in sick due to the beautiful sunny weather.

Prepare your office for the summer sun

This, unfortunately, is an issue for the employer annually, with an estimated £900 million being lost each year on sick leave.

Inevitably, most sick days are taken during the summer, meaning that you might benefit from optimising the temperature in your office to ensure that it is comfortable for your employees, potentially preventing sick days in the process.

The Importance of Temperature

As it currently stands, there are no specific regulations on temperatures in the office, only a suggested temperature of between 13°c and 16°c from the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

However, the regulations do stress that it is the employer’s responsibility to create a safe and healthy working environment. This is encouraged to alleviate any potential discomfort and subsequent grievance that your employee might have with the temperature, and can also promote a healthier, productive office atmosphere at the same time.

For many years, studies have linked temperature in the office with a number of important factors. These include productivity, employee happiness and health, and can all be improved with a controlled and regulated temperature.

However, what is important to consider is the fact that many employers make the mistake of assuming that temperature grievances are because the area is too cold. This is not the case, especially in the summertime, when rising temperatures outside mean that offices can quickly become stiflingly hot, and means that employers should also consider the benefits of industrial air conditioning units.

This is where Heritage Heating & Cooling Ltd can assist.
